Hi! My name is Jen Pitts and I’m a hot glass artist <grin>.
It took more than 30 years for me to find molten glass, but less than 30 minutes to fall in love with it. I’ve been a Disc Jockey, a Technical Writer, a Computer Instructor, a Project Manager, and a Marine. I’m still dividing my time between my day job as an IT Manager and my dream job experimenting with, being mesmerized by, and occasionally burning myself with hot glass, but I'm taking steps towards a more serious focus on the art, and ultimately freedom from the day job!
I became interested in jewelry design so I could create pieces that wouldn’t cause my metal allergy to flare up. I fell in love with art glass for its unique, versatile appeal and when I received an unexpected bonus I bought a torch and kiln and with the help of internet articles and forums taught myself how to make glass beads.
I remember that first session in the flame vividly – I had intended to focus on the basics – just make a round bead, you know? But I couldn’t do it! I rolled that bead in frit, painted it with stringer, put dots on it, poked it, pinched it, and swirled it. The experience was absolutely amazing, and the bead wasn’t half bad either!
I’m inspired by nature, art and fashion, and I often wake with a vivid design in mind. I go into each torch session with a plan, but always leave time for creative play, which often yields the most satisfying and interesting pieces. My beads take all forms and sizes, but I especially enjoy creating complex “beadscapes” by incorporating multiple layers of transparent and opaque glass, metal leaf, enamels, lusters, cane, and latticino. I also creates kiln-formed pendants, sculptures and platters. My work can be found in art shows, open houses, galleries, and on-line.
